It was erected in the XIIth Century by the Benedictine Monks belonging to the Saint Paul Out of the Walls Monastery on an area dedicated to a hellenistic temple. The access portal is placed within some IInd Century after Christ marble jambs, with some splendid “acanthus – crowned” motifs and zoomorphic depictions.
Also a capital of the presbytery and the sepulchral area facing the church can be ascribed to the same templar construction. The church, in the romanesque style, consists of a high central aisle communicating with two small lateral aisles through six round arches.
At its inside the church preserves an extraordinary series of frescoes and a canvas of Caravaggio’s school, showing Saint Peter, patron saint of the town. The christening font and the tabernacle are the great sculptor Giacomo Manzu’s works.
