St. Peter's Church

  History of St. Peter's Church

It was erected in the XIIth Century by the Benedictine Monks belonging to the Saint Paul Out of the Walls Monastery on an area dedicated to a hellenistic temple.

The access portal is placed within some IInd Century after Christ marble jambs, with some splendid “acanthus – crowned” motifs and zoomorphic depictions.

Also a capital of the presbytery and the sepulchral area facing the church can be ascribed to the same templar construction. The church, in the romanesque style, consists of a high central aisle communicating with two small lateral aisles through six round arches.

At its inside the church preserves an extraordinary series of frescoes and a canvas of Caravaggio’s school, showing Saint Peter, patron saint of the town. The christening font and the tabernacle are the great sculptor Giacomo Manzu’s works.
